- The first dance may only take up 3 minutes of your wedding, but our couples tell us time and time again, that it's one of the most special moments of the day, that'll stay with them forever -

The beauty of having a singer and musicians perform your first dance is not only that they'll make it uniquely yours, but they can usually change the tempo of a song and even the words too, which makes it truly personal!

I've found that first dances for the most part are usually a dreamy, romantic choice and over the ten years I've been singing first dances, there've only been a handful of more unusual requests. One that springs to mind was when one of our couple's chose 'The Conga!' to overcome their nerves. For the most part though, first dances are usually songs that bring a lump to the throat and a tear to the eye and boy have we seen a lot of tears..... and shed quite a few of our own I don't mind admitting! You just can't help it.... This is powerful stuff you know.

A sweet example of a song we were asked to change was when one of our couples told us their song was 'Mr. Brightside' by the Killers, and they asked us to play a slowed down version. It was the first song they'd shared together on a beach in Oz, where they first met travelling - so there could only be one first dance for them! On another occasion, we changed the lyrics to 'Wasn't Expecting That' by Jamie Lawson so that the song had a happily ever after ending. And we arranged a really sweet version of 'Same Love' by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis so that it became a spine-tingling, acoustic ballad.

If you're struggling to think of a first dance, I suggest having an evening together listening to songs and I'm certain it will come to you. Song lyrics are a poetic and brilliant way to convey how we feel but they don't always have to be mushy. First dance lyrics can be fun, tongue and cheek or maybe even deep, mysterious and intense. If words aren't your thing though, then there's always the music. Does the thought of a funky, upbeat first dance make you feel more at ease? Or is it a slower dance that you see yourselves swaying to? I always think that a wedding should be a reflection of who two people are, and what better way to flaunt that, than through lyrics and music gifted by brilliant song makers. When it feels like a song has been written just for you, then you know that's the one.

And please don't panic at the thought of how to dance to your special song, I can honestly say that I've never seen a 'polished' first dance and I'm certain all of my couples won't mind me saying that. They'd wholeheartedly agree! Almost all are a shuffle and a sway. Some couples have a little thought out choreography but it always ends up in giggles and a spin! But one thing's for sure - all are 100% perfect! That, I can tell you!

I've put together a list of some first dances below that we've been asked to learn and play over the years. Perhaps you'll find some inspiration if you're still unsure? The first dance may only take up 3 minutes of your wedding, but our couples tell us time and time again, that it's one of the most special moments of the day, that'll stay with them forever. So it's worth making sure your first dance is everything you both deserve it to be.
